The full explainer

What is EFT tapping?

EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques. It is a somatic practice: you gently tap specific acupressure points on your face and body with your fingertips while naming, out loud, the thought or feeling you are working on.

This page is the longer version: the nervous system in plain language, why the body is part of the work, and what a session actually looks like.

First, the nervous system, in plain language

You have heard “calm your nervous system.” Here is what that system actually is. Think of your body like a company: there is a headquarters, and there are field operations.

01

The command center

Your central nervous system is your brain and spinal cord: headquarters. Your peripheral nervous system is all the wiring that runs from HQ out to the rest of the body: organs, skin, muscles.

02

The gas pedal

Inside that wiring is an automatic setting. The sympathetic side is the gas pedal: fight, flight or freeze. Your heart races, muscles tighten, pupils dilate. Useful in real danger, draining when it is always on.

03

The brake pedal

The parasympathetic side is the brake pedal: rest, digest, recover. Your breath slows, digestion turns on, the body repairs and rebalances. This is the state where rest, creativity and focus live.

The modern problem: many of us run with the gas stuck on. Emails, deadlines, social media, relationships, everything. Our baseline becomes hurry. When people say “calm your nervous system,” what they mean is: shift out of stress mode and back into recovery mode.

So what is EFT tapping?

EFT tapping is a somatic practice that works with specific acupressure points on the body. The idea is related to acupuncture, but there are no needles: you use your own fingertips.

What makes it distinct is the pairing: while you tap the points, you focus directly on the challenge at hand and name it out loud, in your own words. It draws on both the cognitive side, saying the true thing, and the body side, the tapping itself.

A habit

Mostly conscious. Easier to do or not do, like brushing your teeth.

A pattern

Mostly subconscious. A loop you may not even realize you are in, which is why patterns are harder to break, and why information alone rarely breaks them.

EFT is built for the second kind.

Why the body is part of it

The premise underneath somatic work: when you experience something, you experience it three ways at once. Mentally, emotionally and physically. And stress shows up in the body plainly: a tight jaw, braced shoulders, a clenched gut.

So in this work, the body is part of the process too, not just the thoughts about the experience.

What tapping actually looks like

You tap a sequence of points on the face, chest and hands, moving point by point at your own pace, guided the whole way:

Side of the hand Eyebrow Side of the eye Under the eye Under the nose Chin Collarbone Under the arm Top of the head
01

Rate it first

You start by rating how much the thing bothers you on a scale of 0 to 10, where 0 is “this doesn’t bother me” and 10 is “this is affecting my day-to-day.” It gives the work a before and after.

02

Name what is actually true

You begin with the honest statement, the one that feels true, not the positive one you wish felt true. Naming the real thought is what lets it move.

03

Tap through the sequence

Eyes open for the first round or two, tapping each point while you keep naming the thought or feeling. If anything feels like too much, you pause, drink some water and tap your collarbone. You set the pace.

04

Notice what comes up

Some people notice yawning, sighing, tingling, warmth or coolness, or tiredness while they tap. All ordinary. The point is to notice, rate again, and keep going at your own pace.

The easiest way to understand it is to try it

A single 1:1 session is the simplest way in: one pattern, one session, no ongoing commitment. You will leave knowing exactly how tapping works, because you will have done it.
